A petition, approved by the Vice-Chancellor, for the increase of tuition fees, and a censure of a pamphlet against John Colbatch, Professor of Moral Philosophy. The pamphlet was by Richard Bentley, classical scholar and Master of Trinity College, and formed a salvo in the long war between him, fellows of his college and the University at large. He had written it in the belief that Colbatch was the author of another pamphlet attacking him; the pamphlet was actually the work of Conyers Middleton, another fellow of Trinity and shortly to become “Protobibliothecarius” of the University Library.
Will Hale, Rare Books Specialist, CUL
