<p style='text-align: justify;'>Colour photograph of Thomson's modified version of Perrin's tube. JJ Thomson used this type of discharge tube in his first determination of the e/m ratio of the cathode rays in April 1897. The results were similar to those obtained by the more famous experiment in which the electric and magnetic fields deflected the beam of cathode rays.</p>
