<p style='text-align: justify;'>Colour photograph of the Kew magnetometer. This instrument enabled the absolute value of the Earth's magnetic field strength to be determined. It was bought by Maxwell for the Laboratory at a cost of £60. It was used as a test experiment for prospective research students during the Maxwell era.</p>
