Cavendish Laboratory : Laying the foundation stone of the Austin Wing

Cavendish Laboratory

The construction of the Austin Wing started in May 1938. When the building was well under way, Bragg was very embarrassed to receive a letter from Austin asking when he could lay the foundation stone. The principal architect, Charles Holden, suggested that as the foundations were actually in place at this point, the foundation stone could be built into a wall flanking the entrance steps. The ceremony was held on the 6th May . One year later the building was completed.
