Cavendish Laboratory : Example of a bubble raft by W.L. Bragg
Cavendish Laboratory

Black and white photograph of WL Bragg's bubble raft, with the edge of the dish visible. During the war years, Lawrence Bragg invented the bubble raft. This model provided a visualisation of the behaviour of dislocations in solids and their plastic deformation in two dimensions. Dislocations in the regular 'lattice' of soap bubbles are clearly demonstrated. Bragg, assisted by Nye, created a film of the bubble raft.
