Cavendish Laboratory : Leake 's X-ray diffraction head

Cavendish Laboratory

Incorporating a goniometer designed by Andrew Lang this equipment was designed and used by John Leake to measure the Compton scattering of X-rays from solids of low atomic number to determine the electron momentum distribution. The equipment was surrounded by a lead-based safety screen supported on the dexion frame on top of an X-ray generator supplied by Philips. The X-rays were detected by a scintillation counter made in-house and enclosed in the aluminium cylinder at the top right. This equipment was subsequently used by Malcolm J. Cooper.
