Black and white photograph of the cyclotron viewed from the operating side in 1956. In the cyclotron particles are bent in a circle by a strong uniform magnetic field. Their energies are increased each time they pass over the accelerating gap between the two Ds. The cyclotron could accelerate deuterons to about 10 MeV.
