<p style='text-align: justify;'>Annual photograph of Cavendish staff and research students, 1897. J.J. Thomson, the Cavendish Professor, is in the centre of the front row. In 1895, the University allowed students from other universities to become students who would study for a BA degree by research. Rutherford from New Zealand and Townsend from Dublin were was first ones to take up this opportunity. All those in the photograph apart from L. Blaikie stayed on for the next year when they were joined by an almost equal number of new students (see P576).</p>
