<p style='text-align: justify;'>As support for the 1 MV and 2 MV machines, Edward Shire constructed a van de Graaff electrostatic generator in a new purpose-built building called the Electrostatic Generator Building. It came into operation in 1950 and was capable of accelerating particles up to 3 MeV. (Longair, 2016, p.282)</p>
