Cavendish Laboratory : Rutherford reading a newspaper
Cavendish Laboratory

On one occasion, Lady Rutherford and her daughter Eileen visited Cambridge and found a rather derelict house with a large garden which charmed them both. When Rutherford was appointed Cavendish Professor, Lady Rutherford eagerly revisited the house and found it still availble. It was called Newnham cottage on Queen's Road, the property of Caius College. Rutherford lived there from 1919 until his death in 1937. (A.S. Eve, 'Rutherford', CUP 1939, p.270)
