<p style='text-align: justify;'>Black and white half length portrait of Rutherford as a student. Rutherford was a New Zealander and one of the first students to join the Cavendish Laboratory as a graduate student from abroad in 1895. He was awarded an 1851 Exhibition scholarship to go anywhere in the world to carry out research of importance to New Zealand's industries.</p>
