Cavendish Laboratory : Page from Rutherford's notebook for 9 November 1917, on long range particles from nitrogen
Cavendish Laboratory

This entry in Rutherford's notebook records the remarkable discovery of the emission of energetic protons in the collision of high energy alpha particles with nitrogen nuclei. The protons had greater energy that that of the incoming alpha particles. Rutherford inferred that the energetic protons were created in the 'disintegration' of the nitrogen nuclei. This research was among the last which Rutherford carried out in Manchester and was continued in Cambridge with James Chadwick.
