<p style='text-align: justify;'>After the appointment of J.J. Thomson as Master of Trinity College, Rutherford was appointed the fourth Cavendish Professor. He was concerned however about the possible competition between him and Thomson and interference in the management of the Laboratory. J.J. assured Rutherford that he would not interfere and Rutherford accepted the appointment.</p>
