JJ Thomson giving a lecture demonstration with the Braun cathode ray tube. This version of the cathode ray tube, known as a 'Braun tube', was constructed by the German physicist Ferdinand Braun in 1897. The tubes were robust and he sold them commercially. At the far end of the tube, there is a phosphorescent screen which registered the arrival of the cathode rays. This tube was presented to JJ Thomson by Braun and used by Thomson to demonstrate the operation of the e/m experiment.
