Diagram of the tube used by JJ Thomson in the discovery of the electron, taken from his paper (Thomson, Phil. Mag., (5), 44, 293, 1897). Thomson found the mass-to-charge ratio of the cathode rays was only about 1/2000 of that of hydrogen nuclei. He had already found a similar value in his earlier experiments with a Perrin tube (P2035). Thomson was awarded the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the conduction of electricity in gases.
