<p style='text-align: justify;'>Rutherford and Robinson's apparatus for measuring the charge to mass ratio of alpha-particles. See: Rutherford and Robinson, Phil. Mag. (6). 28, 552, 1914. Rutherford and Robinson measured the deflection of the beam of alpha-particles in an electric field. A potential difference of 2000V was maintained between the long plates and the deflected trajectories were measured on the photographic plate. The apparatus had to be much longer than an electron tube because the much greater mass of alpha particles resulted in a much smaller deflection.</p>
