1837

Originally built as a guildhall dating to the late C15 or early C16 it was used as a workhouse by 1600, with inmates originally working at spinning or weaving. Soon poor relief was paid in cash but the building was again a workhouse by 1776, when it had 40 inmates. It was converted to cottages, was occasionally used as a schoolhouse but is now one dwelling. It is timber-framed with plaster infill, 2 storeys and a hipped plain tiles roof. It was superbly restored from 1967 onwards by Peter and Margaret Spufford, and adapted for disabled access. Etched glass windows are by David Peace.

National Heritage List for England; VCH 1978
