<p style='text-align: justify;'><p>J Warner for Lysons</p><p>This stone effigy is almost certainly for Sir Robert de Walkefare, d. 1334, who had built the N chapel where he lies. In 1331 de Walkefare was licensed to give 60 a. at Isleham to endow a chaplain to celebrate mass there for himself and his wife Margaret, and in c. 1580 Layer recorded glass depicting the couple and asking for prayers to be said for them. The knightly effigy lies beneath a crocketed arch and wears a plain flowing surcoat with belt and necklet, apparently still c. 1580 painted with his lion rampant, but the stone (clunch?) used is very damaged and worn and its heraldry was already defaced by Layer’s time. Only stumps of his arms and legs survive but he still has a lion at the foot end.</p><p>Palmer 1932; VCH 2002</p></p>
