1819

Labelled ‘Representation of Ancient Painted Glass in the upper window of the South Aisle of Waterbeach Church. Cole describes ‘2 very ancient coats’, including a talbot for Burgoyne and 3 lions couchant. The glass was broken and fragments are now included in later windows. The two-light window Relhan shows appears not to have survived WM Fawcett’s restorations, and may have gone at an earlier stage, but the two upper shields, including those of Burgoyne and its companion (but with a fess azure instead of argent) were among six set into the upper bisected section of a three-light window in the S aisle) with the inscription ‘Fragments collected and reset 1874 by WMF’. Another window in S aisle contains the dog with blue background and 2 of the lions couchant in the shield below, from Relhan’s window. It is possible there are other fragments to discover amongst the glorious windows in this church.

Bradley and Pevsner 2014; Clay 1859; Saunders P pers comm
