Relhan Collection : 294 Little Shelford church. Mural monument to Gregory Wale Esq, d. 1739
Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844
Relhan Collection

Relhan considerably simplifies an elaborate cartouche and inscription but shows the Wale arms clearly and coloured, demonstrating his main interest and methodology of building on what he saw with heraldic information from elsewhere. The actual inscription on the white marble tablet also refers to Wale’s ancestors, 2 wives and 2 sons but is high up on the N wall and difficult to read. It has slight traces of colour. Gregory Wale’s son Geoffrey, d. aged 25, is buried near the pulpit. The obelisk for Wale (209), whose family came from Gt Bardfield, Essex, records that he was a JP, Deputy Lieutenant, County Treasurer and Conservator of the Cam.

Saunders P pers comm
