Relhan Collection

Cole 1742 records a canopy supported by 2 Corinthian pillars with Goldwell arms dated 1596 on one side and Torrell arms dated 1591 on the other, with a lengthy Latin inscription. On S wall are 2 Goldwell coats of arms. Bury manor had been given to Ely c.1000, was sold to John Goldwell in 1600, and sold on in 1614. In 1929 only 2 Goldwell coats of arms were noted, and it was surmised that many other monuments had been lost. The other manor, Moynes/Granham’s, was acquired by John Hinde of Madingley under Henry VIII and sold by his son Francis (259) to the Goldwells. They sold it to the Bishop of Exeter, whose nephew, Ernest Carey, sold it to Edward Ventris (292) in1646. His family sold it to Francis Duncombe, whose daughter Anne sold it to St John’s College. Today there are stone panels displaying coats of arms on the S chancel wall, presumably remains of this monument.

Bell 2013; Palmer 1932; VCH 1982
