Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

The font was modified by RR Rowe as part of restoration work on the church (287), incorporating an early C16 bowl base with architectural fragments of shields from the earlier font. Bell 1883 describes the new font as ‘octagonal with instruments of the Passion carved on shields and it rests on 8 marble pillars’, and according to The Gentleman’s Magazine 1799 it bore the arms of the see of Ely and of Thomas Pattesley. Rowe’s shafts have since been cut down and the font is displayed on a tessellated starburst pattern, altogether an eye-catching but odd mixture.

Bell 2013; Bradley and Pevsner 2014
