Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan appears to have been defeated by the inscription on black marble high up in the chancel, so there are some inaccuracies and abbreviations. He writes ‘Here lieth Gregory Milner 2nd sonne/ to Iohn Milner of Pvdsey in the Covnty/ of York Esq sometime a senior fellow of/ Trinity College in Cambridge. He after/ took to wife Susan eldest davghter / to Roger French esq of Cambridge/ and dyed at Sawston Novr 5 1616’. Gregory Milner graduated at Trinity 1572 and became fellow and Proctor there. He may have been a prebendary of Canterbury 1600-1614, but having surrendered his fellowship to marry Susan French, he moved to Sawston, where he was a tenant of Dale Manor at his death. His will left substantial benefactions to Trinity, the vicar, widows and orphans of Sawston, the poor of Bottisham and Whittlesford (where he had property) and the repair of Pudsey Chapel. The monument is a painted alabaster tablet with the couple kneeling either side of a prayer stool, both in ruffs and black gowns and Susan in a close fitting black bonnet. It is still coloured and in good condition.

Bradley and Pevsner 2014; Saunders P pers comm; Teversham 1943; Venn
