Relhan Collection : 277 Rampton church. Monument of member of Lisle family
Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844
Relhan Collection

Labelled ‘Monument of Sir ... De Lisle. Rampton church’. Slightly tinted with a fraction of the arms visible on the shield (see 279). The figure is presumably Sir Robert de Lisle, whose father, also Robert de Lisle, had held the manor from 1212. He became patron of the church 1260 and his shield (279) bears the Lisle arms. He died 1262 or earlier. Cole recorded seeing the monument in 1744 and it was placed in its present position when the chancel was rebuilt in the same year, beneath a canopy that is later than the monument (c. 1340). Slight traces of colour survive. Sir Robert is shown drawing his long sword from its sheath, wears a short tunic with a longer cloak, his leather shoes are buckled at the ankle and they rest upon a lion that was complete in Relhan’s drawing and is now much damaged. A large shield is hangs down his left side. The stone effigy is scratched and battered and was evidently modelled in clunch.

Bell 2013; Palmer 1932; VCH 1989
