Benton identifies this as ‘old General Adeane’ on the basis of the flags and military accoutrements on which the arms rest. General James Whorwood Adeane, 1740-1802, came from an Oxfordshire (Chalgrove) family which held estates in several counties. He joined the Army 1755, became Colonel 1788, Lieutenant-General 1796 and General 1801, and was appointed Groom of the Bedchamber to George III from 1784 to his death. He married Anne, heiress of Robert Jones of Babraham Hall and, although Anne was disinherited (due to disapproval of this marriage), their son, Robert Jones Adeane (131), inherited as a minor and General Adeane used his son’s estate to support becoming an MP for Cambridge borough 1780-1789 and Cambs 1789-1802. The Adeanes remained resident squires through most of the C19 and much of C20 and had a great influence on village life. This hatchment has been lost, but there is a handsome white marble wall monument to General Adeane in the chancel.

Fisher 2009
