Relhan Collection

Henry Leyell 1717-1803, nephew of Balthazzar Leyel (49), grew up in Sweden but sold his Swedish lands and emigrated to England c. 1740. He inherited Bourn Hall and its estate upon the death of his uncle’s widow c. 1756. He married Catherine Allestrie, and their daughter Catherine married the 4th Earl de la Warr (52). These magnificent arms still have their faded colours.

Helmets and other arms commonly accompanied medieval warriors and could remain with monuments in the church for many years. They also seem to have been displayed and retained for elite burials through the C17 and C18 at least, awarded to men of wealth with no military experience at all.

Bingley and Cockerill 2006; VCH 1973; Gittos 2019
