Carved and painted clunch, topped with an achievement of the arms of Lyng. The stone is badly eroded and has virtually lost all colour. Cole 1742 recorded the inscription ‘hic jacet Anna Lyng, Virgo casta, Faemina omnibus virtutbus exculta, de generosa Prosapia Petri et Margareta uriunda, Anima efflavit, Anno Domini.’ (Here lies Anna Lyng, a chaste Virgin, a woman cultivated in all virtues, originating from the noble Family of Peter and Margaret, she breathed her last in the year of our Lord....'). A C20 pencilled comment on this drawing, probably by Benton, says ‘the rest of the inscription is not given, but is still legible’.

Bingley and Cockerill 2006; Palmer 1932; RCHME 1968
