Part of a letter, c. 11th century, written by Samuel he-Ḥaver b. Moses, in Tyre, to Ephraim he-Ḥaver ha-Meʿulle b. Ephraim (sic! error for Šemarya), in Fusṭāṭ. He requests the recipient’s intervention on behalf of a young female orphan from Tyre who had married a man from Fusṭāṭ called Hillel. Once she had become pregnant, her husband took her savings of 5 dinars and abandoned her. She is now left destitute and trying to raise her young son. Ephraim is asked to attempt to compel the now absent father to provide for his son, in keeping with BT Ketubbot 49b, to which the letter alludes.
