Royal Observatory Greenwich Drawings and Paintings

Pencil drawing of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, thought to be the work of Elizabeth Smith. This drawing shows the Altazimuth Dome (middle of the image) between the hot house and the Quadrant Room. Airy built the three-storey Altazimuth Dome, with its low wooden drum, in 1844.

This is a slightly closer view of the Altazimuth Dome than that at (RGO 116/3/13). Similar views of the Observatory by Elizabeth and her sister, Caroline Smith, drawn before the addition of the dome, can be seen at (RGO 116/3/2) and (RGO 116/4/1-2).

For a history of the grounds and gardens at the Observatory, see http://www.royalobservatorygreenwich.org/articles.php?article=966
