Civilian Internment

<p style='text-align: justify;'>In 1940, Miss S.E. Nicoll-Jones visited Singapore at the request of the police to examine the problem of prostitution. She submitted her report in May 1941. After the war began, she remained in Singapore, working in the camp set up on St. John's Island for Japanese internees, and with children orphaned or lost during air raids upon the city. She was evacuated immediately before the fall of Singapore and died when her ship was sunk by the Japanese navy.</p>
