<p style='text-align: justify;'><p>This is Jones’ largest painted inscription and, according to Nicolete Gray, it is the one he considered his most important. It may also be the first to use Chinese white as a background colour for the entire page. The Welsh of the first part is from the 14th century poet Gruffydd Gryg. The Latin of the second part is from the Canon of the mass where it is preceded by the words ‘offerimus praeclarae malestati tuae’ (Nicolete Gray, <i>The Painted Inscriptions of David Jones</i> (Gordon Fraser, 1981), p. 34).</p><p>Included in Nicolete Gray, <i>The Painted inscriptions of David Jones</i>, London: Gordon Fraser, 1981, catalogue 37.</p></p>
