Cairo Genizah : Letter

David b. Benjamin

Cairo Genizah

A letter in Hebrew from David b. Benjamin to Pinḥas ha-Kohen. Benjamin is on the road to Palestine (אנחנו על דרך ארץ ישר׳), but he requires the balance of the charitable donation that was made for him (the pesiqa, הפסיקא here). He would also like Pinḥas to speak to the gabbay (charitable collector, גבאי) about a further small collection to be made for his son 'today' (פסיקת קטנה של בני היום, sic). He says that he has already written to the judge R. Ḥananʾel. For a translation see no. 55 in Cohen, 'Voice of the Poor' (2005: 101). An edition is given in Mann (1931: I 463-4). Verso contains the address, לכבוד הכהן החסיד ר׳ פנחס, and, in a different hand, some lines of a piyyuṭ.
