Mediterranean Embroideries : Panel from a bed tent
Mediterranean Embroideries

This textile would have been one of the two vertical entrance panels of a bed tent (sperveri) from Rhodes, as seen in the image nearby. These tents were made to cover marriage beds, traditionally placed on a raised wooden platform in the corner of the room. The thick, bubbling stitch is characteristic of this island's embroideries, as is the repeating flowerpot motif (glastra) which, from afar, looks like a heraldic crest.
