<p style='text-align: justify;'><p>The patterns on this cover, such as the repeated flowerpot, connect embroideries made in the Aegean islands with those made in North Africa (see the sampler to the right). Although it may look black, the thread here is a deep indigo and used on a white background, introducing a different, monochromatic colour palette to that used across most of the Mediterranean world.</p></p>
