Decoding the Desert : Goodchild: Inland Tripolitania sites, milestones and inscriptions

Decoding the Desert

Lantern slides bordered by brown tape, most of which are labelled with numbers on white stickers on the bottom corners. Mostly site photographs of various Roman settlements in inland Tripolitania, most notably Ghirza, El-Ureia and Ain Wif, with a number of photographs focusing on milestones and other inscriptions. Ones taken by Goodchild likely date to 1946-9, however there are also many older photographs of the site of Ghirza originally taken by Lieutenant Gorgio Bauer for his 1935 publication. It is therefore likely that these slides were compiled in order to provide further context within presentations of Goodchild's 1948-1950 publications, to which much of the photographed material relates.
