Decoding the Desert : Goodchild: Tripolitania, Roman forts and settlements

Decoding the Desert

Lantern slides bordered with black tape and labelled with numbers on white stickers on the bottom corners. Many were taken by Goodchild during his explorations in inland Tripolitania during 1946-9, with the exception of two pertaining to Arae Philaenorum from 1950-1. Mostly site photographs, both aerial and ground-level, of various Roman forts and settlements throughout Tripolitania. Many photographs emphasise details in Roman masonry and architectural elements and can be found in various articles published between 1948-1954. There are also several diagrams pertaining to Leptis Magna, as well as site photographs taken during the restoration of Sabratha Amphitheatre between 1927-1937 which Goodchild here reproduced.
