Decoding the Desert : Goodchild: 'Map of Roman Libya' expeditions, sites and buildings

Decoding the Desert

A set of 52 'Ditta Vasari' lantern slides, labelled as CYREN/50 and TRIP/50 taken by Richard Goodchild between 1950-1. These primarily consist of site photographs – both aerial and ground-level - of forts and Roman buildings from Roman Libya. These photographs were taken during the 1950-51 'Map of Roman Libya Expeditions' and in some cases feature in various articles centred on regional Roman inland defences which were published between 1951-1954 as a result of the expedition's findings. The order is by site, indicated by pencil markings on the back of the slides, and these slides bear descriptions of the subject and its location on them. There also features photographs which contextualise Goodchild's Libyan expeditions of 1950-1, with a particular example documenting his presence at the 'Marble Arch' near Arae Philaenorum.
