Decoding the Desert

Original photographic prints from the 1910-1911 American archaeological expedition to Cyrene in Libya, many are annotated on the back by Arthur Sladden. The photographs begin with views of the site, in particular the northern necropolis, and some pictures of members of the team: the leader Richard Norton, the medical officer Arthur Sladden and the photographer Lawrence Mott. The site photographs include one print annotated with a cross indicating the exact spot where the epigrapher Herbert De Cou was assassinated. Photographs of small finds range from stelae that feature inscriptions, statues (mainly of draped females no longer in possession of their heads), and small terracotta figurines, all excavated during the 1910-1911 season. A letter from Richard Goodchild to Joyce Reynolds, dated 4 May 1967, describes his study leave in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he read the Norton-Kelsey correspondence.
