Middleton’s Architectural Odysseys : Notebook X

Middleton’s Architectural Odysseys

Inscribed on the flyleaf, 'J. Henry Middleton, Grand Hotel, Athens' and 'Notebook X'. The notebook consists of Middleton's notes on classical architecture and topography in Athens during the Spring of 1892. In particular his focus is upon the monuments on the Acropolis of Athens: Propylaea, the Parthenon, the Erechtheum, the Asklepeion, the Theatre of Dionysius, the Acropolis walls and stairs, Stoa of Eumenes, and roof tiles. Also the bee hive (tholos) tomb at Menidi (Attika), Roman mosaic by the harbour of Zea (Piraeus), sketch views of Mount Pentelikon from the Plains of Marathon, the Bay of Marathon, 'Roman stoa by the Horolosium', and 'rock-cut tunnel and stairs to well' at Mycenae (North Gallery and Postern Gate?).
